do vegans need to take supplements? It turns me off to it a bit, having to take vitamins everyday?

Anonymous
No, because everything your body requires is available from vegan sources. I don’t, nor do I know any vegan that does, take supplements regularly (and even when supplements are taken, it is usually for reasons that can afflict anyone like poor diet maintenance, illness, eating disorders, etc…).
I would be more concerned about the nutrient intake of most carnists, since animal-products are not the best sources of much of anything and contain a whole bunch of shit your body doesn’t want.
Why would it turn you off? Because the idea of taking a cruelty-free pill of condensed nutrients is somehow less desireable than consuming the violent death of a sentient being (presumably using ‘doing what’s ‘natural” for reasoning)?
How do you feel about the 'White people shouldn't have dreads' issue?

Anonymous
Thoughts on a vegan turning vegetarian but remaining vegan when convenient? (E.g. the person is extremely stressed, no vegan friends, lacking in nutrients etc.)

Anonymous
I wasn’t aware that vegetarianism helped with any of those things?
There is plenty of support, information and advice in vegan communities both online and in real life, it’s not hard to seek it out.
Get off your fucking high horse-oh sorry, I used a term about an animal I'm terrible. If you think your little attention fiasco is going to save the world COOL STORY but don't knock on the fellow who doesn't give a fuck and isn't hurting you.

Anonymous
Does it make you feel silly to think that, if an ‘attention fiasco’ is what I’m really after, you’re contributing to it?
In response to the Chia seeds question you were posed... I use Chia seeds everyday in my oatmeal and often for baking things such as muffins, pancakes, etc. They are filled with happy Omega-3's and really don't taste like anything at all. =]
I've seen a few recipes call for them but I don't know anyone who's ever used them before. I first heard about them on a vegan food blog.

Anonymous
Well, give them a go and see how you get on. I am wary of them, though, since nuts and seeds are like uber powerful laxatives for me :’(.
Have you ever used Chia seeds in anything? If so, how did you find them?

Anonymous
Before reading this message I had never even heard of them.
I just found them using Google.
Do you ever get on the vegan tag and laugh when you see someone trying to start with Tommy?
I don’t think I have even seen Tommy in the vegan tag, honestly. I mostly see food in there.
It depends on how I am feeling already. Plenty of times I just get mad that so much wisdom is being wasted on people with brick walls for heads. It’s partly empathy rage and partly rage at the futility of it all - if Tommy can’t get through to them, then how can I?
If it is not rage, it is more bewilderment. But, I know I have laughed at the especially idiotic ones.
(It probably doesn’t help that I am just pissed off 99% of the time anyway)
what would you say to a vegan who smokes cigarettes, and don't say "they're not vegan" since you can't decide that or not, nicotine is more addictive than heroin, so it's not surprising. I dunno what to say to my friend.

Anonymous
Most tobacco is not vegan. If you smoke it, knowing that it is not vegan: you are not vegan. That is not me deciding; that is just how it is…
The tobacco that is ‘vegan’ (by a purely ingredients-based definition) is still either tested on animals, or the parent company of the brand tests on animals.
I think the claim that nicotine is more addictive than heroin is skewed somewhat by the easy and legal acquisition of tobacco.
Tell them to do themselves, the animals and the people around them a favour and stop smoking.
whats your opinion on medicine tested on animals? would you take it if needed? Ive been vegan for 9 years mainly for animal rights. BUT, if I was going to die, best believe I'm taking that medicine to save my life, I mean c'mon.

Anonymous
It fucking sucks.
In addition to that: any medication you take has already passed the animal testing phase and the human testing phase. The results from the animal testing phase were unusable in terms of being allowed to market the medication so, therefore: completely irrelevant.
Animal testing is something that companies conduct as an aside to their medicine production for financial gain. That said, though: I don’t take any medication and I’m not sure I would.
Most nights I cry myself to sleep because I cannot bear the thought that I am living in a non-vegan world. I actually feel my blood pressure rise when people tell me things like 'speciesism does not exist'. I know I sound pathetically dramatic but I feel I have no one to relate to over veganism + I was wondering how you deal with all the anger/upset?

Anonymous
You don’t sound pathetic, dramatic or ‘pathetically dramatic’.
The burden of knowledge is a heavy one to bear; having the destructive, cruel ignorance of that knowledge thrust in your face; having your sensibilities disregarded and your feelings ignored, trivialised or made fun of; feeling out of place and alone in most social environments all day, every day, is fucking tough.
Try to be strong and beleive in yourself, you are doing a good thing; the right thing. Remember to be happy that you are not like them. Use the pain you feel for the animals to fuel you to help them, however you can. And if you need to cry: just fucking cry, don’t hold it back. I cry a lot and I rarely try to stop myself; why should I? Crying is a genuine (and appropriate) reaction to how we treat animals (and humans, and the planet…); why should we try to curb or dull those feelings? It is lack of empathetic feeling that causes most of the shit we’re crying about. I don’t see it as I am ‘too emotional’, or whatever, more that others have lost touch with their emotions.
How do I deal with it? I rant on here, mostly. I am very lucky to have Gem to rant with in person. Do you have anyone close to you who would listen? I sometimes rant to my mum (if it comes up when we speak, I don’t call her just to shout about stuff). I can’t really realate to her about veganism (she is veggie), but she listens to me and it helps.
If you don’t feel as though you have anyone in your ‘real’ life, come online! The Tumblr vegan community is super friendly and isn’t the only place vegans visit. A bunch of us are on Facebook, then there is Volentia, the Vegan Forum and a bunch of other places you can go an connect with other vegans.
You can always come and talk to me, too. I am without a PC right now, so getting online for more than a few minutes isn’t always easy but I will reply when I can. Sometimes it is just good to write all the shit in your head out, even if nobody sees it.
Feel free to come off anon, I don’t respond to personal messages publicly and won’t respond to any message publicly if you ask me not to.
Also for the B12 pills, you can get chewy fruit flavored ones. It's less of swallowing annoyance and more of a tasty treat to brighten up the morning.
We always had slavery, too. It was great for the southern US's economy. But then those pesky ethics came in and ruined such a "proud" tradition.
I was going to post a list of fucked up things that the human race has always done, but I couldn’t be fucked as it would be lost on that prick.
Vegan - ancient term for people who are weak , incompetent and unable to hunt. true story ;) and besides we have always eaten meat, just that we have simplified it by industrializing it.

veg·an /ˈvēgən/
Noun: A person who does not eat or use animal products. Coined in 1944 by Donald Watson, the founder of The Vegan Society, in England. Being the first 3 and last 2 letters of the word’ vegetarian’: Donald wanted the new word to mean “the beginning and end of vegetarian”.
You’re obviously about 6 years old, but even to you 1944 does not constitute ‘ancient’…
can a vegan get his or her B12 from foods rather than pills, I'm really not wanting to take pills, and don't think its necessary. Says its in my cereal and soy milk, that good? lol.

Anonymous
This is a good place to start on your B12 discovery journey.
Also read here and here.
In short: yes, you can easily get enough as plenty of foods are fortified with it.
